Our story
Built by an experienced clinician who saw a gap that should not exist, and decided to fill it.
The problem we kept seeing
Across the mental health and wellbeing sector, in university counselling services, community charities and third-sector organisations, there are thousands of skilled, dedicated practitioners doing some of the most emotionally demanding work imaginable. Sitting with crisis. Holding complexity. Showing up, session after session, for people at their most vulnerable.
And yet, when it came to their own professional support, too many of them had very little. Supervision that was rushed, infrequent, or delivered by someone with no real understanding of the specific world they worked in. Or in some cases, no meaningful supervision at all.
"Clinical supervision is not a box-ticking exercise. It is the difference between a practitioner who thrives and one who quietly burns out, and it matters just as much to the people they support."
Where the gap really lies
NHS services, private practices and large clinical organisations tend to have supervision infrastructure built in. But university wellbeing teams and mental health charities often operate in a different reality: smaller budgets, less formal governance, and a workforce that spans counsellors, mental health advisors, wellbeing practitioners and peer support workers, often with very different training backgrounds.
Finding a supervisor who truly understands that world: the specific pressures of working with students in crisis, or the particular challenges of the third sector, is harder than it should be. Generic supervision, delivered by someone unfamiliar with your context, only goes so far.
Who we are
Specialist Supervision was founded by a qualified mental health professional and experienced clinical supervisor with over 20 years working in the field, spanning direct clinical practice, supervision delivery and wellbeing service development.
Having worked within services that had strong supervision cultures and those where it was an afterthought, the difference was impossible to ignore: not just in practitioner wellbeing, but in the quality and safety of client care. This business was created to fill a gap that simply should not exist.
Our supervisors
We do not operate as a single-person practice. We have a carefully selected group of supervisors available to work with your team, each bringing their own clinical background, specialist experience and supervisory style.
This means we can match supervisors to practitioners thoughtfully rather than fitting everyone into the same mould. We have capacity to support whole teams as well as individuals. If your service grows or your needs change, we can flex with you.
Is qualified, experienced in mental health or wellbeing settings, and committed to the same restorative, practitioner-centred approach. Many have specialist experience across HE and third sector services, bringing genuine contextual understanding, not just clinical theory.
What we believe
We believe supervision works best when it is a genuinely safe space: where a practitioner can bring their most difficult cases, their doubts, their emotional responses and their professional growth, without fear of judgement. The focus is as much on the person doing the work as on the work itself.
Our approach is restorative and relational. We draw on established supervision frameworks to structure the work, but we never lose sight of what supervision is ultimately for: helping good practitioners stay well, stay skilled and stay connected to why they entered this field in the first place.
Our commitment
We work specifically with mental health and wellbeing teams in higher education and the charity sector. Not as a sideline: as a specialism. When you bring a case to supervision with us, you are working with someone who understands the institutional context, the ethical landscape, the pressures on your service and the particular population you serve.
We offer individual and group supervision for practitioners at all levels, from newly qualified counsellors to experienced senior practitioners and team leads. We also work with service managers to develop supervision frameworks and governance structures that support whole teams, not just individuals.
